About Us
Rocky For Equality was founded in July 2011 with a simple idea: bring people together, celebrate individuality, and create positive change… BY ENJOYING ROCKY HORROR!
For more than a decade, Rocky For Equality has used live theater as a way to celebrate LGBTQ+ culture, support local artists and businesses, raise money for community organizations, and create a welcoming space where everyone can be themselves. While The Rocky Horror Show is at the heart of what we do, RFE is about much more than one show. We believe theater can bring people together, start conversations, support important causes, and (most importantly) be a whole lot of fun.
Our productions have taken many forms over the years, from traditional stage productions of The Rocky Horror Show to our 2019 production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch and our first holiday-themed Rocky Horror production in 2025. In 2026, we're expanding into an entirely new format with our first-ever shadowcast performances, bringing RFE into the classic Rocky Horror tradition of performing alongside the original film.
Rocky For Equality believes in community. We strive to support local artists, businesses, groups and charities by bringing people together and sharing the wonder, weirdness and joy of Rocky Horror with communities across Maine. We also welcome performers, artists, volunteers, businesses, organizations and Rocky fans of all backgrounds and experience levels. Whether you're stepping onstage, helping backstage, joining us in the audience, or simply being yourself, there's a place for you here, and we encourage you to contact us if you would like to be involved.

2011 — Rocky For Equality Is Born
Rocky For Equality was founded in July 2011 with a mission to bring our community together through The Rocky Horror Show Live. Our first production took place in October 2011 in Brewer, Maine, where we partnered with EqualityMaine to support the Maine same-sex marriage and LGBTQ+ equality movement.
2014–2018 — Augusta & The Colonial Theatre
In 2014, RFE moved to Augusta and joined forces with the Augusta Colonial Theatre restoration project. We staged The Rocky Horror Show at Le Club Calumet and partnered with local organizations including Darling's Ice Cream For A Cause and the Augusta Downtown Alliance to help raise money for the theater.
Through productions in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018, RFE continued its partnership with the Colonial Theatre and ultimately raised more than $7,500 for the restoration project.
2019 — Hedwig and the Angry Inch
When we were unable to obtain the rights to Rocky Horror in 2019, we weren't ready to sit out a year. Instead, we chose a production that shared many of the qualities we love about Rocky Horror: queer culture, counterculture, unforgettable characters and cult-classic status.
RFE presented Hedwig and the Angry Inch at the Governor's Mansion in Augusta, giving us another opportunity to celebrate LGBTQ+ stories, performers and audiences while staying true to the spirit of Rocky For Equality.
2020 — A New Home in Lewiston-Auburn
In 2020, RFE moved to the Lewiston Auburn area and began working with Community Little Theatre at the Great Falls Performing Arts Center.
2025 — A Holiday First
In 2025, RFE expanded its Rocky Horror repertoire with our first-ever holiday-themed production at Community Little Theatre. The production gave us a chance to put a festive twist on the world of Rocky Horror while continuing to experiment with new ways to bring the show and its community to life.
2026 — RFE Goes Shadowcast
In 2026, RFE will enter a brand-new chapter with our first-ever shadowcast performances. Although RFE has spent years performing The Rocky Horror Show live onstage, this is our first time performing alongside the original film—the format that Rocky Horror shadowcasts are classically known for.
We are joining the Spooktacular Tour at the Waterville Opera House on October 24, 2026, before bringing our shadowcast to The Waldo Theatre in Waldoboro on October 30, 2026.
It's a new venture for RFE, but one that feels like a natural next step for a group that has always loved finding new ways to celebrate Rocky Horror, queer culture, community and the wonderfully weird.
